Extracts from The Jazz Rag - Jun 2001

"..........For the confident solo playing, a hearty yes .......... I'm impressed with Callard, whose positive line and stream-lined attack helps make the opener Straight Ahead memorable .......... I'm not sure that I can pin point the leaders musical influences but I suspect Michael Brecker's funkier effusions interest him as do the recordings of people like John Patitucci and Pat Metheny.......... There are moments of pastoral calm, then come stormier outbreaks .....Gordon's time sense never deviating ..........Pianist White hews to the Evans line and her open, expansive playing is one of the best things about the 15-minute Stepping Stones.......... Jones himself is a fine bassist, comparable to the best of the current UK crop .......... Castle continues to grow, building lengthy solos in his Brecker-to-Redman fashion ..........If you encounter Jones on a gig and like what you hear, you'll want the album ..........sample it if your tastes lay in the currently fashionable hinterland between straight modernity and fusion ........"
